About Salzburg

Salzburg is a city that punches well above its population (150,000). The old town, entirely on the UNESCO World Heritage list, is a masterpiece of baroque architecture compressed into a tight river bend below a fortress. The Salzach river divides the city neatly: the historic right bank with the cathedral, Mozart's birthplace and the covered market; the left bank with the castle and most of the residential neighbourhoods.

The city's two great cultural moments — the Mozart connection and its role as the filming location of The Sound of Music — have made it one of the most visited small cities in Europe. The Salzburg Festival in July and August is one of the great classical music events in the world. In December, the Christmas markets are among the best on the continent.
