Tucked into the gentle valley of the Almtal in Upper Austria, Romantikhotel Almtalhof earns its romantic name with ease. The village of Grünau im Almtal is the kind of place that feels genuinely removed from the rush of modern life, surrounded by the rolling forested hills of the Salzkammergut…

"A place to feel good"

The house exudes history, which I really appreciate when I'm in an area like this. The staff also contribute to keeping this history alive by sharing their knowledge of the building's history and the surrounding area with the guests. Ending the day by the fireplace is a special treat not to be missed. The welcome was incredibly warm and hospitable; from the very first moment, I felt comfortable and welcome as a solo traveler. This was also because my requests were accommodated whenever possible. Dinner in the restaurant was a delight for all the senses, as was the breakfast buffet. Homemade products, such as apricot jam and pear juice, demonstrate the commitment to regionality, just as I would expect in a mountain village.
Disliked
I can't think of anything specific to say about that.

"Overpriced and the food was not of good quality."

The hotel is old and full of antiques. It's in need of renovation. We booked two rooms over the Christmas holidays. We paid approximately €200 per person per day for half-board. The high price was not commensurate with what was offered! It was far too high. On the positive side: The breakfast and housekeeping staff were very friendly. The breakfast selection was good, but should be better at this price point. The room and bathroom were good. The spa was good.
Disliked
Negative: One of the rooms had no Wi-Fi despite the room description stating it was available. The manager said he didn't care – no one had complained before! The network cable hanging freely above the room door was not for Wi-Fi but only for the fire alarm system. - Smoking is permitted in the bar and reception area. There is no separation from the rest of the building. No signage. This is generally prohibited in Austria! - Dogs are allowed in the restaurant. On New Year's Eve, one vomited twice next to our table! - Food: It was supposed to be "Michelin-star quality." But it certainly wasn't. Examples: "pink venison" – one piece was overcooked and dry, the other raw inside; "roast pork" – was cheap pork belly; "pink veal roulade" – was overcooked and tough; "corn-fed chicken breast" – included a piece of wing that was bloody inside. The wait for four courses was usually 2.5 hours! Complaints were ignored. There is no salad bar.

"EVERYTHING FINE"

An exceptional place. The hotel, with its old country-house style and wood paneling in the rooms and all the common areas, creates a very pleasant atmosphere. You simply feel at ease. All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Everything is spotlessly clean. The highlight is the cuisine. Every evening, a menu worthy of a Michelin-starred restaurant. Simply delicious. The breakfast buffet also leaves nothing to be desired. We would love to come back.
Disliked
Very flat headrests, but that should be the least of our problems considering the overall comfort factor.
